Irvington is located approximately 23 miles north of mid-Manhattan where it enjoys impressive frontage views of the Hudson River. Irvington is named for the renowned author, Washington Irving, who lived in a cottage on Sunnyside Lane from 1835 to 1859.Washington Irving called it "a beautiful spot, capable of being made a little paradise." The Irvington School District encompasses a 4.5 square mile area, which includes the Village of Irvington, a portion of southern Tarrytown, and part of the unincorporated areas of Greenburgh.
The Village of Irvington residents take pride in the fact that the business district remains quaint and complete with essential shopping. Town Hall, a handsomely restored Classical Revival building, is resplendent with tiffany stained glass windows, courtesy of its former namesake resident. Restored factory buildings along the village's waterfront house upscale businesses, and scenic parks abound.
Large numbers of Irvington's long-time residents choosing different housing within the community rather than moving to other communities. Availability of new housing from construction of single-family homes and condominiums attracts new residents interested in a small community with quality schools. The Irvington School District has long enjoyed a stable population base of approximately 7,000 students.
The mission of the Irvington School District is to create a challenging and supportive learning environment in which each student attains his or her highest potential for academic achievement, critical thinking and life-long learning. The schools encourage the discovery and development of students’ individual strengths, skills and talents, and foster social and civic responsibility. Four schools serve the District to achieve that mission: Dows Lane Elementary School (K-3), Main Street School (4-5), Irvington Middle School (6-8), and Irvington High School (9-12).
The Irvington High School was selected as a National School of Excellence in 1992. The High School's curriculum is designed to accommodate the academically oriented: 98% of seniors choose post-secondary education. Students are frequently recognized for their academic, musical and athletic skills in addition to their generosity of spirit contributing to their peers, their school and their community through service organizations.
